In late summer and fall (August through October), male spiders leave their webs to search for females, making them more visible indoors. Additionally, cooling temperatures drive spiders to seek warm shelter, often entering homes through gaps and cracks. This is also when many spider eggs hatch, releasing hundreds of spiderlings that may wander inside. During this period, homeowners may notice a sudden increase in spider sightings, especially in living areas. Cats and dogs may be curious about spiders and can be bitten, especially on the nose or paws. However, pets are typically larger relative to spider venom dose, so fatalities are rare. Treatment for pets involves veterinary care with antivenom or supportive care. Beyond black widows and brown recluses, common household spiders vary by region. In the Northeast, cobweb spiders (Theridiidae) and cellar spiders are prevalent. In the West and Southwest, desert species like the Arizona black widow and tarantulas (though harmless) are notable. Pacific Northwest homes often encounter giant house spiders (Eratigena atrica). Spiders are natural pest controllers. A single spider can consume hundreds of insects per year, including flies, mosquitoes, and pantry pests. If a provider starts an inspection in the basement, there is a reason: Bertone and colleagues found spiders in 92.6% of 54 North Carolina basements in 2012, though that small-sample presence figure is not a national prevalence rate. In ConsumerAffairs' February 2024 survey of 2,000 U.S. respondents about home infestations, which mixed pest and mold questions and relied on self-reports, 17% said they had done nothing about their pest problems, a general consumer figure and not a per-pest statistic.
