Drawing the map and running the survey
Take a sheet of paper and draw the footprint of the house as a box or a few joined boxes. Label the sides north, south, east and west, or front, back, left and right. Add the garage, deck, porch, sheds and fence lines. Mark every door and window as a small line, every vent as a V, and every exterior light fixture as an L. This takes ten minutes and gives every dot a context. Start at the front door and walk clockwise. At every web, put a numbered dot on the map at the spot and take a photo. Frame the photo so the site is recognizable: the fixture and the corner, not only the silk. If the web is high, note the approximate height. Write a line in a list: number, side, height, shape, spider or sac present, nearby conditions. Shape is worth a consistent shorthand. O for orb, T for tangle, S for sheet with a funnel, I for irregular and strong. That last one, low and in a dark spot, is the widow pattern and deserves a closer photo of any spider present, from below if possible. Do the deck underside, the meter box area, the steps, and behind anything stored against the house. Those low dark sites are the ones that matter most for safety and the ones a walk-past misses. Then do the interior on a second sheet: basement, garage, closets, bathrooms, ceiling corners. Number continues from the exterior list so every site has a unique number. The finished document is one or two sheets and a folder of photos.
Reading the map: clusters and causes
Lay the map flat and look at the dots. Circle any group of three or more within a few feet of each other. Write beside each circle what the dots share, using the notes: fixture, vent, hedge, corner, deck, meter box. Count the dots in each circle and rank the circles. Typical results on a single-family house look like this. The largest circles are around the front and back entry lights and the garage light. The next are along a run of soffit vents on one side. Then a hedge line where shrubs touch the wall. Then the deck underside. Then a scattering of single dots that share nothing in particular. Each cause has a fix. Fixtures: warm bulbs, motion sensors, downward shields. Vents: fine mesh screen. Vegetation: trim a foot or more from the wall. Sheltered corners with no other cause: these respond to dewebbing plus a residual application. Deck and meter box: clear stored items, inspect for widows, deweb and treat. Write the fix beside each circle. Now the map is a work order. Do what you can at the top two circles first, because the biggest clusters give the biggest change, and leave the rest for the provider or for next weekend. Mark the date on the map. This is the before picture. Everything after this is measured against it.
Using the map with providers and updating it
Send the map, the site list and the photos for the top clusters with your quote request. Ask each provider three things: to deweb and remove sacs at every numbered site, to treat the clusters, and to state for each circled cause whether they will fix it, recommend a fix, or leave it to you. Ask that the service ticket list site numbers. Good responses are site-specific and honest about scope: we will deweb all sites to the second-story line, treat the eave and deck clusters, screen the vents at an added cost, and recommend the bulb changes for you to make. Weak responses repeat a standard package. After the visit, walk the map within a few days and mark any site already rebuilt. At one month, redraw the map on a fresh sheet with the same numbering. Compare cluster sizes. A fixture cluster that dropped from eight dots to one after bulbs were changed and the eaves were treated is a success you can see. A vent cluster unchanged because the screens were never installed tells you what to do next. A deck cluster that persists needs a closer inspection. Keep every version of the map in your service folder with the tickets. Over a year the sequence shows the seasonal curve and the effect of each change. Each spring, start a new map, because fixtures get replaced, shrubs grow, and new sites appear. Property managers can run the same method per building side with fixture and vent counts, and hand the map to both maintenance and the provider so they work the same list.
Spider problems by the numbers
The statements below are tied to named surveys, studies and published cost guides, and each one says what it does and does not prove. They describe patterns across many households, which is useful context, not a diagnosis of any one property. When Bertone and colleagues inspected 554 rooms in 50 North Carolina homes during 2012, they recorded spiders in 78.5% of them; the study documents where specimens were present, not how many homes are infested. For most homeowners, pests are a when-not-if problem: 76% of respondents to HomeTeam Pest Defense's 2022 online survey of U.S. homeowners said they had faced one in the past year, though the figure is self-reported and the survey was sponsored by a pest-control company. Use these numbers as context, not as a diagnosis. A provider's written inspection findings should drive the treatment plan, and any quote should spell out how many visits, which areas and what follow-up it covers.
